“Raise the Hands!” Board game: canvas, wooden hands, dice, three curtains, 2022

Commissioned by Setouchi Triennale, Japan

For the 2022 Setouchi Triennale, I created an installation with a focus on engaging children. It comprised of two main components. The first component was a board game that invited participants to select rules from a list provided or create their own.

The rules:

Version 1

Place the hands in the circles on the canvas and use the dice as bowling balls. The winner is the player who knocks down the largest number of hands.

Version 2

You can play in teams or individually. You can play one hand or multiple hands. Choose the starting circle, the finishing circle, and direction. It can be straight, or a zig-zag, or a spiral. Put the hands into the starting circle. Throw dice to advance your hand towards the finishing circle. The number of steps corresponds directly to the number on the dice.  The winner is the player who takes the most amount of hands from the starting point to the finish.

Version 3

Each player throws one dice and puts the corresponding number of hands into the circles. The winner is the player who puts the last hand in the last circle.
